My name is Jennifer Nicolitz, and I'm the law librarian for Fidelity National Title Group. I became a law librarian because I like helping people find the right tools and resources they need to do their job better.
Our legal department is very large. We have over 400 in-house attorneys. Some handle claims. Some are litigators. And they're all over the country. We have 300-500 outside law firms that we work with, and they also help us litigate claims in all 50 states.
Hear what Jennifer says about WestlawNext.
We thought WestlawNext would be a good fit for our legal department because we have a lot of cost-saving initiatives that are the focus of the company right now, given the current state of the economy. One of those is creating synergies and making work faster so our attorneys are more efficient. WestlawNext helped us do that.
The decision-making process started with the presentation of WestlawNext, and when I saw the innovative features, I immediately thought this was something we have to try. And after the trial, our attorneys didn't want to give up their passwords. In fact, they were asking for more.
I took this information to the general counsel, and we discussed the implementation. We decided that this was going to help us save money, and we had to have it.
Across the board, we're seeing our attorneys work quicker and have more confidence in the results they're getting, and they're also able to access our internal documents while they're searching on WestlawNext, which really creates efficiency.
The use of WestlawNext has allowed us to bring more matters in-house, as opposed to using outside counsel, which is an additional savings to the company. In particular, we have our pleadings ready and available for in-house to use, and we have all that research there, so it doesn't have to be done again. We're not recreating the wheel every time we get a new claim.
WestlawNext can help a general counsel of any company save money, and that's really important in this economy. I would tell a general counsel they're missing an opportunity if they don't use WestlawNext. Using it allows you to have less staff but get the same amount of work product. The searching is easier, and overall, it just saves costs across the board.
If an outside firm is using WestlawNext their bid will probably come in lower than other firms, and that would influence our decision to choose them. We can trust that outside firms using WestlawNext are going to get the right answer and it's going to be the right information. I would recommend that they use WestlawNext because I want them to see the same efficiencies and cost savings that we're seeing. And I think it will help them have a more reliable work product at a quicker pace.
We had a very successful rollout of the product, thanks to our senior client manager. She made it so easy. She walked me through everything the entire way. Every question. Every detail. I felt we had more than just a business arrangement. It was like a friendship. She wanted to see me succeed.
The comments I've heard about WestlawNext have been a really fun part of the implementation. I've had avid users of other search programs that were worried and hesitant, run down to my office and said: "I love this. It's so much easier to use."
I love being a law librarian, and I think using WestlawNext adds to that satisfaction, because I know that I can provide our attorneys with the best possible research and pleadings – and do it quickly.
I think what the iPod did for music, WestlawNext is doing for legal research. It's revolutionizing the way that we think about and use legal research.
