I'm Susan Clary and I'm a partner at Hennelly and Grossfeld. I practice several different kinds of law, but my love is intellectual property litigation. I do a lot of commercial litigation ... big lawsuits between big people who have big problems.
The most interesting part about being a lawyer is, of course, going to court. But I've always considered myself a real maven of research. I loved the process back in law school and I love it now as a practicing lawyer.
Hear what Susan says about WestlawNext.
There is really a world of difference between Westlaw, as we were using it two years ago, and how we're researching today with WestlawNext. It's not just the delivery system. It's not just the way the product looks. It is a substantive difference in the way you're able to approach a problem, look at what's available, and make a plan right from the beginning.
I feel like WestlawNext is more of a partnership between the product and the lawyer.
I'm certain that by using WestlawNext I'm more efficient. It's so fast that, with the level of research that I'm accustomed to doing now, I can't imagine going back to the way things were.
What I love the most about WestlawNext is that – even for someone like me who likes research – it takes it to a whole new level. And for some of my associates that don't particularly like research, they still understand that it's the fastest, most efficient tool to use. WestlawNext is the best and it's the only thing I trust.
We're all in the "get it right" game one way or another. And the products that give us a competitive edge are things like WestlawNext that deliver your ability to win.
In 35 years of practicing law, I've had research, not just save my bacon, but bring home the bacon more times than almost anything else.
Skill is one thing; but facts and the law are another. And knowing that you found the right answer is priceless. That's what we do and it's what we love to do, because there's no feeling like winning.
I recently did a motion for a $46 million default. I knew I could get that amount because – in less than an hour on WestlawNext – I found 20 cases in the federal system where other people had gotten multimillion default judgments in cases similar to mine.
Then I was able to look at their briefs and see that they all cited the same cases. So I was able to take the best of what they had done, convert it to my case, and finish in a matter of hours. That would've taken days, if not a week, to do before.
I have a client who's a general counsel of a Fortune 100 corporation. He's a very savvy man. And I have never had him question one of my bills for either time spent or the cost of online research through WestlawNext. In fact, he's just as big a fan as I am.
For somebody like me who likes the results of research, WestlawNext is almost like magic.
I can't imagine that there's a more efficient way to do research and to feel like you've gotten where you need to go. You can always stop, but you haven't always finished. And now, with WestlawNext, you're able to finish.
I challenge anybody to say I could have done it faster without using WestlawNext. I don't think it's possible.
